WHATEVER WEDNESDAY- ANTIOXIDANTS

Hey folks,

Welcome to this edition of Whatever Wednesdays! Today's topic is Antioxidants. I often hear this term thrown around by nutritionists, on television and in magazines. So, I decided to do a little digging and uncover what the real deal is about it.

ANTIOXIDANTS

According to healthcastle.com, Antioxidants are nutrients or substances in our foods which can prevent or slow the oxidative damage to our body. When our cells use oxygen, they produce free radicals (by-products) which can cause damage.

Antioxidants act as "free radical scavengers" and prevent and repair damage done by these free radicals. Heart disease, diabetes, cancer etc. all come about through oxidative damage. Researchers from London discovered that 5 servings of fruits and vegetables reduce the risk of stroke by 25 percent. Antioxidants may also enhance immune defense lowering the risk of cancer and infection.
