TALK TO ME TUESDAYS- GOT MILK?

Hey everyone,

Welcome to Talk To Me Tuesday!  Today's question is about milk.  My sister LOVES milk and can't fathom the idea of giving it up to become vegan.  So, she asked what are good alternatives for her to try to replace her beloved milk.

Well M,  here are some great ones for you to try:

SOYMILK- Made from soybeans.  An emulsion of oil, water, and protein, it is made by soaking dry soybeans and grinding them with water. Soy milk has about the same proportion of protein as cow's milk: around 3.5%.  Soymilk comes in many brands and can be found at most grocery stores.  I happen to think this would be the best one to try to transition because it tends to be of a thicker consistency closely resembling that of milk in my opinion- especially the flavored varieties.

RICE MILK- is a grain milk processed from rice. It is made mostly from brown rice and commonly unsweetened.  Many commercial brands of rice milk, however, are often fortified with vitamins and minerals, including calcium, vitamin B12, vitamin B3, and iron.

ALMOND MILK- Almond milk is a milky drink made from ground almonds. They are often enriched with vitamins.

COCONUT MILK- I have recently also noticed Coconut Milk on the shelves from the company Turtle Mountain that makes the SODelicious brands of non-dairy products.  Click here to get more nutrition information for this type of milk. I have tried this myself and liked it a lot.

I was never a big milk drinker before I became vegan so that part wasn't an issue for me.  So, I usually only buy any of the above when I need them for baking and on the occasion that I eat cereal which is not often at all.  Out of the three, I tend to buy and like Almond Milk the best with Coconut coming in second.

Now, please understand that none of the above taste like the milk you're used to drinking so don't expect them to.  I just encourage you to have an open mind and at least give them a try.  I'm sure you would enjoy them better than putting water on your cereal.  If you're asking about alternatives then you're obviously curious about trying some, so give it a shot and let me know how it goes!

  1. I buy Almond milk the most too, particularly Blue Diamond. Silk should stick to soy milk, and that is what I buy the second most. I usually comes down to which one is one sale. I have tried the others, but they are a little far away from the milk taste for me.

  2. I'm a huge fan of the So Delicious coconut milk beverages. They taste most like dairy milk to me, and they are great in coffee and on cereal. They even have $1 off coupons on their website, which you can get here: http://turtlemountain.com/products/coupon.html
