Welcome to Whatever Wednesday! Today we're going to take a look at the Acai berry and it's many benefits. 

ACAI (ah-sah-ee)

The acai berry is an inch-long reddish, purple fruit. It is native to Central and South America coming from the acai palm tree (Euterpe oleracea).

Acai contains several substances called anthocyanins and flavonoids. The presence of these substances help prevent diseases such as heart disease and cancer.

A 100-gram serving of Acai contains only 90 calories, two grams of fat and no cholesterol. It also provides 3.5 grams of dietary fiber. Acai also contains a healthy dose of plant sterols which are a class of phyto-chemicals that have been linked to reducing cholesterol, protecting the immune system, and relieving prostate enlargement.  Other benefits include increased energy levels, improved digestion, detoxification, high, improved skin appearance, improved heart health and improved sleep. 

Due to the delicate nature of the pulp of the acai berry, it's currently only available in juice form which can be found in the refrigerated or freezer section of natural food stores.
