I've been hearing a lot of buzz lately about the power packed chia seeds.  So, true to fashion, I had to do some digging to educate myself and you further about this apparent superfood!


Chia or Salvia hispanica, is a species in the mint family, native to central and southern Mexico and Guatemala.

Chia seed can be consumed raw as a whole seed. In Mexico, chia seeds are placed in water or fruit juice and known as chia fresca. The soaked seeds are gelatinous in texture and often used in porridges and puddings. Ground chia seed is used in baked goods including breads, cakes and biscuits.  Chia sprouts are used in a manner similar to alfalfa sprouts in salads, sandwiches and other dishes.

The chia seed is full of protein as well as fiber, loaded with antioxidants, packed with vitamins and minerals and is the richest known plant source of omega-3.

Adding just 2 tablespoons of chia seeds to your daily diet regimen will supply you with approximately 7 grams of fiber, 4 grams of protein, 5 grams of omega-3 and 205 milligrams of calcium.
