VIDA VEGAN CON RECAP-PART UN!

Hey folks,

Well, it's finally here! Part one of my recap of Vida Vegan Con!  I must admit that I have struggled a bit with deciding on the direction I want to go in for these recaps.  Shall we say a little bit of post conference writer's block?  Well, it must be done, so I'm gonna push through this one and hope that you enjoy the ride!

I had been anxiously awaiting this conference since the day I was approached about being a speaker.  Imagine my sheer delight and surprise when I was finding out that a) there was going to even be a vegan bloggers conference and b) that I was being asked to participate in it!  I had only been blogging a short time, so I was beyond humbled and honored to be asked.  I of course nearly broke my fingers typing my urgent affirmative response!

THURSDAY-Cut to the wee early morning hours of Thursday, August 25th when I was on my way to join my fellow vegan bloggers for an amazing time.  I was able to catch up on some past due reading of my VegNews magazine and take a beautiful picture outside my window.

After a short layover through Boise, ID, I arrived in Portland.  I met my wonderful travel buddy and conference supporter, my mom!  She flew all the way from Northern, VA to attend the conference and see me speak on the panel, ever so supportive! So, after venturing to the hotel and getting settled for a bit it was time to find our way to the informal meet and greet at Vendetta.  We got there and had the pleasure of meeting some wonderful people, especially Sally who used to live in Portland and gave us all sorts of information about getting around on public transportation.  We chatted it up with her and a few others and then it was time to head to the screening of Vegucated.  Upon waiting for the doors to open I was happy to run into Robert Cheeke, vegan bodybuilder who I had the pleasure of  interviewing here a little over a month ago as well as meet my fellow panel mate Leigh-Chantelle of Viva La Vegan! Vegucated was a great documentary, I found it very thought-provoking, sad and funny.  By the end of the night I was already so energized and excited about what was in store for the next few days...

FRIDAY- Registration wasn't due to start until 3:00, so that left mom and I some time to explore Portland for a bit! We got a map and directions from some very helpful and nice Portlanders and headed downtown.  The weather all weekend was sunny, warm and gorgeous. We walked around for a short bit and had a delicious lunch at Cafe Yumm!, which I talked about here.  Then we headed back up towards Portland State University to register and after getting turned around a bit, with some help with a phone call to Leigh-Chantelle, we made it to the University Place Inn to check-in and pick up our swag!

We got to meet the uber-amazing organizers, Jess, Janessa and Michele who were always busy at work, as shown here:

and here is a picture of the swag (courtesy of VegNews).  I was like a kid at Christmas!

So, we still had about thirty minutes of time to kill, so we sat in the lobby waiting for the opening welcome reception to commence.  Once the doors opened, it was time for the games to begin! You could feel the energy and excitement in the room.  Mom and I found a seat and I headed over to grab us some cupcakes and my mom a glass of champagne.  There was also sparkling cider available for those of us who don't drink which was very nice.  We also tried some hazelnut-based cheese and crackers from Heidi Ho Organics!  My non-vegan mom enjoyed all of the offerings and couldn't believe it was all vegan!

I got the chance to meet Dynise of the UrbanVegan whose blog inspired me to start my own and she was so warm, gracious and humble.  Janessa, Jess and Michele extended a welcome speech and the conference was official!  We were all joined together with the common bond of veganism and words.  I couldn't have been more happy to be there.

More tomorrow in Part Deux!
