National Papaya Month

Hey folks!

Did you know it was National Papaya Month?  Nope, I didn't either, but according to an article on cnn.com it is! I went over to the folks at fruitsandveggiesmorematters.org to get some more scoop on this fruit!


You want to select papayas that free from blemishes and firm with some yellow streaks. Store them at room temperature for 2-3 days until they are fully yellow to orange.
 
 
Papayas are fat, cholesterol and sodium free. They are also a good source of potassium and folate and excellent source of vitamins A and C.
 
Fruits and Veggies More Matters also shares some great ideas for enjoying papayas as well:
  • Try dried papaya for a sweet treat, or add chopped dried papaya to rice pilaf.
  • Freeze spears of papaya on a stick for a summertime treat.
  • Bake an unripe [mature] papaya. Cut papaya into quarters and remove seeds. Sprinkle with   cinnamon and sugar. Put a little bit of water in a baking pan and add papaya. Bake at 350 for about 35 minutes. Serve hot.
  • Cut in half, scoop out seeds, and grill until grill marks appear.
